Preparing for your newborn session

Newborn photographs are some of the most treasured collection of memories that you can have of your baby. The first few weeks of your baby’s life fly by so quickly that without realising it that curled up tiny baby in your arms has changed dramatically. Newborn sessions are best taken within the first two weeks. Babies are generally more sleepy and somewhat more malleable in the first fortnight. We allow at least a couple of hours for your newborn session and we are very patient and experienced when it comes to settling baby.

1. YOUR ARRIVAL

Please try and arrive 15 minutes before your appointment time so that we do not overrun and have enough time to get the best pictures we can. It’ll also give us plenty of time to fill out paperwork and let everyone relax and feel comfortable before the fun starts! When you arrive at the studio you’ll be able to see samples of some of our work and amazing wall art in The Photo Cafe. This is also the chance for us to discuss what type of pictures you’d like us to create. Arrive early enough and they’ll certainly be time for a delicious hot chocolate or flat white before your session.

Who to bring with you

That entirely depends on who you’d like to have pictures of! Be aware that the session can last a couple of hours so if you’re bringing siblings then it’s probably a good idea to bring something along to amuse them. The Photo Cafe does have a small child friendly area they can play in if needed. We do like to have both parents at the photo sessions as it is always nice to have some family pictures during the shoot. Our studio can comfortably accommodate at least 10 adults and we’ll more than happily photograph the family pets too.

Newborn Session Checklist:

  • Dress baby in front opening baby grow with no vest.
  • Feed baby just before leaving home.
  • Try and keep baby awake before session.
Things to bring with you:
  • Food for baby
  • Nappies
  • Change of clothes for you and baby
  • A dummy (if you use one)
  • Any personal items for the shoot such as blankets or toys
Please let us know if they are there any medical issues we should be aware of.
The newborn session can last up to 2 hours. It is highly likely that baby will need a top up feed during the shoot. The studio will be warm so dress in layers. Babies poo, pee and puke……we are more than prepared for that!

2. YOUR PHOTO SESSION

We allow a couple of hours for each session so there’s plenty of time for a variety of poses during the shoot. Our baby photography studio in Croydon has been designed very much with newborn photography in mind. We have numerous set-ups and props for your baby including vintage suitcases and baskets. Our studio has an exclusive section of G. H. Hurt and Son Merino wools shawls. As you would expect we keep our studio nice and warm and cosy for your baby so that we can achieve beautiful sleepy pictures. The studio does of course have full nappy changing facilities and we allow plenty of time in each session of feeds.
The safety of your newborn baby is of the upmost importance to us and we want you to be confident that you are in safe and qualified hands with many years of specialised training and experience.

2. YOUR PHOTO SESSION

We allow an hour for each session and it’s generally cut into three parts. We begin your photo session with a mini portrait shoot before we get all messy! This is a great chance to get some lovely milestone portraits of your baby. Then we bring on the cake and it’s time for your baby to explore all the textures and tastes that sit before them. After the cake smash photos we’ll clean up with some bubble bath photos to finish off.
