Maternity Photography studio
Each year we shoot around fifty maternity photography studio sessions in our Croydon studio. These photo sessions are usually linked to a bump to baby photography package we offer rather than being a stand alone shoot. That’s not to say that people don’t just want a maternity photography studio session on its own, some certainly do.
There’s a lot of trust a new parent has to put in the hands of a photographer when it comes to newborns. This is why I would encourage any expectant parent to have a maternity photography studio shoot beforehand. Not only is it a fanatic experience, but it’s a wonderful chance to get to know your newborn photographer.
There are many different ways to do a maternity photography studio shoot. This is why we have put together some of our favourite bump photos to show you how we like to do them.
Smiling and having fun
A maternity photography studio session should be fun. As a photographer it is our job to put our subjects at ease. Clearly when we get pictures like this we are doing our job!
Any studio photography session needs to be an experience. It certainly isn’t something you’ll do regularly so when you’re visiting us we hope that it’s memorable and enjoyable.
Bump with siblings
It is often the case that the large majority of our maternity photography studio sessions are of first time mums.
It is a shame that we don’t do more family bump pictures with siblings as it is a really enjoyable shoot.
I would urge any expectant mother, having her second or third baby to book in a bump shoot with her other children.
I should add that if you are expecting your forth, fifth or sixth baby then clearly you are far too busy to book a family maternity session but it’ll be nice to see you all the same!
Back lit maternity shot
When people bring their Pinterest maternity favourites to show us there’s normally a back lit shot in there somewhere.
We love this style of maternity photography. Creating what is almost a silhouette shows off your pregnancy in glorious style.
If you’re looking for a maternity image for the wall then this is a really popular choice. It’s subtle and elegant, exactly what maternity photography should be.
Sports underwear
Leisure wear and sports underwear are really popular choices for maternity sessions these days. I must say from a photographer’s perspective that I really like the look and it suites all different types of lighting.
Traditional outfits
When creating any family photo it is important to instal a sense of identity.
Wearing traditional outfits has been popular in our studio since we first started photographing maternity sessions.
The bring history, culture and usually amazing colour a design to a shoot.
If you have traditional outfits I would 100% recommend bringing them to your maternity photography studio session.
Topless couple shot
We have one rule in when it comes maternity photography in the studio; Dad, if you’re expecting her to take her top off then you are going to have to do the same!
It always surprises me that it’s the men who seem shy about showing a bit of skin!
Joking aside these kind of images are one of our most requested.
Bump to baby
Most people who book a maternity photography studio session also have a newborn shoot with us.
If there’s a particular dress used in the bump shoot then bringing that to the newborn session is a great way to create a lovely set of matching images.
Some people choose to have their newborn session later when baby is a bit older. It is certainly still possible to create these matching images even with an older child.
White shirt
With studio photography I’ve always been an advocate of less is more. That certainly applies to maternity photography.
Some people want to capture their pregnancy and show off a little bump but aren’t entirely comfortable with taking all their clothes off.
This is when a large white shirt come in.
