London Christmas Lights
With all the current and ongoing restrictions many of you might not have been to see the London Christmas Lights this year.
I wanted to end the year with a little bit of festive cheer so I took a quick trip up town to see some of the London Christmas Lights.
My daughter has enjoyed walking around our local neighbourhood looking at all other festive lighting people have put on their homes. I thought it would be a nice idea to take a few images and video of the London Christmas Lights to show my daughter. The idea being to save a trip with her on public transport through London’s busy shopping streets. This was when London was still in tier 2 people were still trying to do some Christmas shopping.
I clearly wasn’t alone with the idea to capture the London Christmas Lights as there was there people taking selfies, time lapses and doing TikTok dances.
Without the tourists London is a pretty strange place at the moment. Even before we moved through the tiers.
London Christmas Lights Walk
Throughout 2020 I have been creating 360 photo images for my Instagram page London In 360. I decided it was about time to create some 360 video content. One of the two videos can be seen below. I made another London Christmas Lights Walk using the same footage which can be found on Instagram.
Oxford Street London Christmas Lights
Oxford Street London Christmas Lights made a return in November. The area is lit with 27 LED ‘light curtains’ which are draped down the length of the street and made up of a total of 222,000 lights. The installations work in unison to showcase a poem dedicated to the city of London.
The Oxford street lights are also highlighting one hero each week and their name becomes a part of the ‘To London with love’ poem which is on repeat in the festive lights display.
Regent Street Christmas lights
The grand shopping sweep gets its usual festive makeover with garlands of lights down the length of the road. See those glorious golden angels make their comeback soaring high above Regent Street.
‘The Spirit of Christmas’ will be lit from the 14th November 2020 – 3rd January 2021, with the displays switched on for the evenings only, for a more sustainable display. Whilst there won’t be our usual switch-on event, we hope their presence will still bring a little light and joy to all this Winter.
Also part of ‘The Spirit of Christmas’ is the St James’ Christmas Tree. For the first time this year, a xmas tree has been provided at St James’ at Waterloo Place near the junction with the Pall Mall.
Carnaby Street Christmas Lights
This year Carnaby has collaborated with Choose Love, a charity from Help Refugees, which is the world’s only shop selling real gifts for refugees. The street will be bathed in pink neon light from a series of light boxes running the length of the thoroughfare. Each box will have a positive word inside, to pay tribute to the strength, courage and kindness of Londoners during this difficult year.
Dermot O’Leary, Choose Love ambassador says “Each year Choose Love gives shoppers the chance to do something beautiful for their fellow humans as winter approaches, buying things like blankets, hot meals and kids coats for refugees and displaced people across the world. I’ve loved being a part of it every year. This year it will be magical to see Choose Love in lights on Carnaby street. It’s been a tough year for so many people so this message of solidarity, hope and connection is now needed more than ever before.”
