Cake Smash Photoshoot Croydon
For the last couple of years we’ve gone first birthday cake smash photoshoot crazy!
We should’ve known that cake smash photography was going to get popular and it’s so much fun!
On average we photograph around 250 cake smash photo shoots in our Croydon studio every year. It’s fair to say that we’ve developed a system for the sessions. They do get messy and there’s plenty of cleaning that needs to be done but we have plenty of experience.
What is a Cake Smash Photoshoot?
Cake smash photography is exactly what it sounds like. A one year old (mostly) is sat in front of a cake and what happens is photographed.
It sounds simple but there’s often a lot more that goes into it.
We’ve put together some of our favourite cake smash images to give you a better idea of what happens or can happen during the shoot.
Hopefully it’ll give you a better idea of what to expect from a cake smash photoshoot and help you plan for your shoot.

Cake Smash photography favourites
We been working together with birthday cake artisans Tinker Treats to develop standard themes for our cake smash photography.
The first theme we developed was classic pink which is a basic theme with a great looking cake.
Classic pink is also avaiibile in classic blue if you’d prefer.
One of our first ever cake smash photo shoots was a watermelon smash. It’s a far healthier alternative to cake and it makes great looking photos.
One word of warning; watermelon smashes are sticky business!
Mickey Mouse theme
Sometime people turn up to the studio with all manner of outfits. We try our best to create a matching theme using different coloured backgrounds and props.
The bath time is our cake smash photography highlights. I’ll be honest with you, not every child loves smashing sticky cake. In fact some children really hate it.
95% of children however love a bubble bath and we’ve got the photos to prove it!
Wall Art Montages
We take a lot of images during a cake smash session. We start off with some nice portraits, then we have the cake smash and then we finish off with bath time.
The best way to display your images is with a multi image wall art. We picked out some of our favourites.
The strange thing about one year olds is that don’t really like cake. They aren’t into icing and they’re not a fan of cream or sponge.
There is one exception and that’s chocolate cake. Visually it’s not as good as some other cakes but the little ones love it.
I think it was around 2018 when unicorns took over the world.
Cakes were not exempt from this hostile takeover and neither was cake smash photography.
As much as we love taking pictures of babies smashing cakes the best photos we take are classic portraits.
Every cake smash session begins with something I often describe as “clean portraits”.
The main reason we photographing a cake smash is because it’s a first birthday celebration. Why wouldn’t you want some really lovely portraits of this huge milestone?
Hungry Hungry Caterpillar
We love it when parents create their own themes. One of our favourites is this Hungry Hungry Caterpillar theme.
We don’t see enough of these giant cupcakes and I don’t know why. They make a great focal point for cake smash photography.
Cake smash photography is all about having fun. Sometimes there’s tears, often there’s no expressions at all but mostly we do have smiles.
Smiles are never guaranteed but if one does creep in you’d better believe we’ll capture it.
One question we get a lot is do we offer two year old cake smash shoots. Of course we do, in fact it’s sometimes a better shoot with an older child.
