Baby’s first steps
First steps are one of of the most exciting baby milestones to reach. When we’re photographing the third stage of our Watch Me Grow shoots we always hope to get some first steps.
Normally this shoot is done somewhere in between baby’s first birthday and 18 months.
To be honest the earlier it’s done the better. Even if baby isn’t walking get the first birthday is an ideal time to have them photographed.
Some people may choose to have a cake smash for baby’s first year and then have their third Watch Me Grow session a bit later.

Baby’s First steps images
Just before baby’s first steps they start to cruise along on furniture. This makes some lovely photos. Occasionally they build up enough confidence to take some first steps.
The Colour Pink
If you have a daughter like me then finding pink objects in your home isn’t going to pose too much of a problem.
Stereotyping aside pink is the colour most often associated with charm, politeness, sensitivity, tenderness, sweetness, childhood, femininity and romance.
Pink can be very strong and vibrant in artificial objects and softer in nature. This isn’t always the case so why not try and find matching hues in man made and natural objects.
Simple props and fancy dresses
We always been advocates of less is more when it comes to props.
A simple flower or headdress really adds something special to an images. These props need to match the outfits to work.
Fantastic expressions
Baby’s first steps are usually accompanied with fantastic expressions.
Our studio portrait photography has always been about expressions whatever age we’re photographing.
Traditional outfits
When we reach the age for baby’s first steps parents really like to bring traditional outfits to the shoot. We love these images as they are a reflection of our varied client base.
Bow ties, braces, flat caps and big smiles
We love it when formal outfit elements are added to to shoot. What’s cuter than a one year old in a bow tie? Maybe a smiling baby in a flat cap?
Balloons
What one year old doesn’t love balloons? We’ll share a secret with you, balloons are our secret weapon to make babies and toddlers smile. The hardest thing to do is try and get them the leave the ballon behind!
Experiments with light
With every studio photo session we try to do something different. It keeps us on our creative toes. Sometimes it really works and adds a whole new element to the photoshoot.
Posing on chairs
Chairs are one of our favourite props. When babies reach one they are usually a bit more stable. That’s not to say they won’t try and throw themselves off everything but we’re more than prepared for that!
Serious expressions
There’s something about a serious expression on a baby which just makes us smile. Not all babies smile all the time so it’s nice to capture all expressions, even if they are serious.
Cheesy grins
What’s not to love about a cheesy grin? When children reach school age the fake cheesy grins kick in. When they’re babies and toddlers the cheesy grins are just awesome.
Tears and tantrums
What’s a baby photoshoot without a few tears and tantrums? Embrace the chaos
